Battle of Rhode Island Commemoration & Sunset Salute

August 29, 2025 @ 6:00 pm8:00 pm

The Battle of Rhode Island Association has invited the NHSAR to participate in the Wreath Laying Ceremony and Sunset Salute commemorating the 247th Anniversary of the Battle of Rhode Island.  New Hampshire played a significant role in this engagement.

General John Sullivan played a key role as the American commander in the Battle of Rhode Island, a significant engagement of the American Revolution, fought on August 29, 1778 on Aquidneck Island, RI. It was one of the first combined American-French military operations of the war, though it ultimately ended in a military draw with both sides suffering casualties. Several New Hampshire regiments participated in the efforts to dislodge the British from Newport.  Hale’s and Nichols’ Regiment of Militia were involved in the battle, along with other Continental and militia units from New Hampshire.
