| Carpenter | Abel | Abel Carpenter | Lieutenant | The following extracts from a notice of Lieutenant Carpenter that appeared in the St. Johnsbury, VT Caledonian, He was a patriot of the Revolution. At the commencement of hostilities he lived in Providence, RI, May 1775 he enlisted as a common soldier and was promoted from that by regular gradation to a first lieutenant and quartermaster in the double capacity of which offices he served between one and two years acceptably and after near four years of service received an honorable discharge. His service was that of toil and danger. He was stationed at oxbury on the day of the Battle of Bunker Hill. He was in a the skirmish at Harlem Heights and was wounded by a musket ball which lodged in his hip and there ever remained as a permanent disability. He was one of the gallant little band of 400 who under General Greene repulsed the 2,000 at the Red Banks and Fort Mifflin in 1777. He was also in the Battle of Monmouth. It is said that he ever bore himself gallantly and with admirable presence of mind. An incident with General LaFayette at the evacuation of Newport by the British shows his firmness of nerve and purpose. To prevent the Americans from crossing from Newport to the main land they took up the bridge except the stringer. Gen. LaFayette was desirous of passing the bridge, but its height and length made his head whirl, and it was impossible for him to cross without assistance, and it was difficult to render it. Mr. Carpenter volunteered and did it the only practicable way and that was by walking backward the whole distance and leading the General by the hands. They performed this perilous enterprise in safety. |
