General John Stark Day
Every year on the 2nd Monday of April, by state law, New Hampshire proudly honors one of its most legendary Revolutionary War figures—General John Stark. Known for his leadership, courage, and enduring patriotism, Stark remains a symbol of the state’s deep roots in the founding of our nation. His legacy is perhaps best captured by the state motto: “Live Free or Die” — a motto General Stark coined — was originally part of a longer statement:“Live free or die,for Death is not the greatest of evils.”
NHSAR will conduct a formal commemoration ceremony at the Stark Statue located on the New Hampshire State House grounds in Concord. The program will feature remarks from members of the New Hampshire legislature, as well as the reading of an official proclamation issued by Kelly Ayotte. The ceremony will include the placement of a commemorative wreath at the base of the statue and will conclude with a traditional three-volley musket salute by the Color Guard.
