Service Description

In 1776, at the outset of the American Revolution, the New Hampshire Committee of Safety directed that all males over the age of twenty-one sign the Association Test. Amos signed this document, signifying his loyalty to the Patriot cause.^[1]

The first record of Amos Holt’s Revolutionary War service was in Captain Benjamin Taylor’s Company of Militia, which marched from Amherst on December 8, 1775 to join the Continental Army on Winter Hill during the Siege of Boston.^[2] In March 1777, Amos enlisted and served under Captain Philip’s Company, Colonel Moses Nichols 5th New Hampshire Militia Regiment, under the command of General John Stark.^[3] The regiment marched from Wilton, New Hampshire on September 29, 1777 and joined the Continental Army at Saratoga.^[4] After the Battle of Freeman’s Farm, General Stark’s brigade moved into a position at Stark’s Knob, cutting off General John Burgoyne’s path back to Lake George and Lake Champlain resulting in General John Burgoyne’s surrender. In August 1778, Amos served under Captain Benjamin Mann’s Company, Colonel Moses Nichols 5th New Hampshire Militia Regiment and joined the Continental Army at Providence, Rhode Island during the Battle of Rhode Island.^[5]
