A Memorial Day Tribute

Honoring our Patriot Ancestors

Each year on Memorial Day, we gather to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we are reminded of the sacrifices made during the American Revolution and the enduring principles for which they stood.

In the struggle for independence, countless men from New Hampshire and across the colonies took up arms in the pursuit of liberty. These early patriots faced tremendous hardship, uncertainty, and danger as they stood against one of the most powerful armies in the world. Many would never return home. Their courage and resolve helped secure the freedoms we cherish today, even at the cost of their own lives.

New Hampshire played a critical role throughout the Revolutionary War, with its citizens answering the call to serve wherever they were needed. Farmers, tradesmen, and young sons left their families and livelihoods behind, united by a shared belief that liberty was worth any sacrifice. While some returned to tell their stories, others fell on distant fields, their final resting places far from home and for many, unknown.

These fallen patriots gave everything—not for glory or recognition, but for the promise of a free and independent nation. Though their individual names may be unremembered, their collective sacrifice lives on in the foundation of our country and in the immortal words of General John Stark: “Live free or die; Death is not the greatest of evils.”

As we near this historic 250th milestone, Memorial Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the ideals declared in 1776 and on the lives given in their defense. We honor those who have fallen in subsequent conflicts along with those first soldiers of the Revolution who made the ultimate sacrifice and did not return home.

Their legacy lives on in the liberties we enjoy and in the continued service of those who wear the uniform in defense of our nation. As members of the Sons of the American Revolution, we bear a special responsibility to remember, to preserve, and to promote the memory of our Patriot Ancestors..

May we honor their sacrifice with never ending gratitude, and may we strive always to live in a manner worthy of the legacy they secured.
