Battle of Bunker Hill

Some unfamiliar Facts About New Hampshire at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

From the mills of Amoskeag to the blood-soaked hillside of Charlestown, New Hampshire’s Colonel John Stark emerged as one of the defining figures of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Answering the call after Lexington and Concord, Stark led a determined force of New Hampshire patriots who would soon earned a reputation for unshakable resolve. As historian Howard Parker Moore famously wrote, Stark’s greatest achievement was simple but profound: he “held the line at Bunker Hill.”

This article, by New Hampshire Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NHSSAR) Compatriot Hibbard Richter (date unknown), explores the critical role played by Stark and his fellow Granite State soldiers—from the early clash at Chelsea Creek to the fierce stand along the rail fence and stone wall on June 17, 1775. Against some of Britain’s most elite regiments, these citizen-soldiers delivered one of the most devastating defensive actions of the Revolution—changing the course of the war and proving that American independence was not only possible, but inevitable.
