Recipient of the Baron von Steuben Color Guard Medal
Guardsman Russell Cumbee was awarded the Baron von Steuben Medal for Sustained Achievement in the NSSAR Color Guard on September 7, 2025. The medal was presented by New Hampshire Color Guard Commander Curtis Hermann and New England District Vice President General James Holmes during the NEDSAR District Meeting held on Saturday, October 15, 2025.
The von Steuben Medal recognizes Color Guard members who have participated in at least twenty-five national and/or district Color Guard events over a minimum of five years following the award of their Silver Color Guard Medal.
Guardsman Cumbee earned his Bronze Color Guard Medal on February 9, 2019, and his Silver Color Guard Medal on March 7, 2020. In addition, he received the Patriot Grave Marking Medal on February 20, 2021 in recognition of his service honoring Revolutionary War patriots.
Over the years, Guardsman Cumbee has represented the New Hampshire SAR at national and district events across New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, as well as at National Congress and Leadership Meetings. He continues to honor our patriot ancestors through his regular participation in commemorative events such as the Patriots’ Day Parade in Concord, MA, the Battle of Bunker Hill Ceremony in Charlestown, MA, and the Battle of Groton Heights Commemoration at Fort Griswold in Groton, CT.
This achievement would not have been possible without the encouragement and support of his wife, (and aid de Camp “ette”), Lydia Cumbee, whose dedication and partnership exemplify the true spirit of service and patriotism that strengthens our Society.
