Flintlock Musket Safety & Maintenance Workshop

Starkโ€™s Company, NHSAR Color Guard sponsored a Musket Maintenance and Safety Workshop on February 7, 2026, at Camp Carpenter in Manchester, New Hampshire. The workshop was taught by Jim Casco of Casco Historical Arms Services.

This handsโ€‘on, practical session focused on the proper care, inspection, and maintenance of flintlock muskets. Through live demonstrations and supervised practice, participants learned how to conduct routine field inspections, perform detailed component inspections, thoroughly clean all major parts, and safely disassemble and reassemble the lock mechanism. The workshop concluded with a detailed, handsโ€‘on demonstration showing the removal of pins and the barrel from a reproduction Brown Bess musket, reinforcing safe and historically accurate handling techniques.

Compatriots attending the workshop included Doug Wood, Dennis Walsh, Russ Whittaker, James Stanford, Timm Billbrough, Greg Salts, Mason Gower, and Curtis Hermann. Their participation reflects Starkโ€™s Companyโ€™s commitment to safety and the proper maintenance of the flintlock muskets used at events.
