The New Hampshire Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NHSAR) proudly participated in three events marking the 250th anniversary of the New Hampshire Constitution of 1776 on January 5, 2026.
The day began with a commemoration ceremony at the State Archives, hosted by New Hampshire Secretary of State David M. Scanlan and State Archivist Ashley Miller. NHSAR Guardsmen Doug Wood, Al Lamson, Brush Bradley, and Curtis Hermann presented the colors to open the ceremony. Brendan O’Donnell, Deputy Secretary of State, read a proclamation issued by Governor Kelley Ayotte. NHSAR collaborated with historical interpreter Mike Lepage, who portrayed Matthew Thornton and delivered a reading of New Hampshire’s first constitution. Also in attendance were NHSAR Compatriots Phil Bascom, Charles Tarbell, Greg Salts, and Glenn Everett.
Later that evening, NHSAR participated in the 250th Commemoration of New Hampshire’s Independence Day, hosted by Representative Joe Sweeney at the Salem Historical Society. Guardsmen Doug Wood, Al Lamson, Brush Bradley, John Ginsberg, and Curtis Hermann again presented the colors. During the ceremony, Mike Lepage gave a powerful reading of the New Hampshire Constitution, portraying Matthew Thornton, one of the state’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. Doug Wood shared an inspiring presentation on New Hampshire’s critical role and contributions during the Revolutionary War, despite its small size. This event honored the state’s rich revolutionary heritage and its lasting impact on American self-government.
Additionally, Compatriot Hans Jackson represented NHSAR at In Congress at Exeter, a celebration of America’s first constitution sponsored by the New Hampshire Supreme Court Society and the American Independence Museum. Professor Lawrence Friedman and Hon. N. William Delker offered a compelling look at the history and politics leading up to the drafting and adoption of New Hampshire’s first constitution in 1776.
Through participation in events such as these, NHSAR continues its mission to educate the public and honor the sacrifices of those who secured our freedoms.
