Honoring a Legend

Every year on the 2nd Monday of April, by state law, New Hampshire proudly honors one of its most legendary Revolutionary War figures—General John Stark. Known for his leadership, courage, and enduring patriotism, Stark remains a symbol of the state’s deep roots in the founding of our nation. His legacy is perhaps best captured by the state motto: “Live Free or Die” — a motto General Stark coined — was originally part of a longer statement:“Live free or die,for Death is not the greatest of evils.”
General John Stark Day provides an opportunity for citizens, patriots, and historians alike to reflect on the values he fought for and the pivotal role he played in America’s fight for independence.
When the American Revolution broke out, Stark led the 1st NH Regiment during the battles of Bunker Hill, Trenton and Princeton. He is best known for his decisive leadership at the Battle of Bennington in 1777. This much needed American victory was followed a few months later by the critical Battle of Saratoga, a crucial victory that helped turn the tide in favor of the American cause. Stark’s deep commitment to liberty and his fierce resolve in battle earned him the respect of his troops and the admiration of generations to come. His service exemplified the spirit of resilience and independence that defines New Hampshire.
The New Hampshire Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NHSAR) takes great pride in commemorating John Stark Day to ensure that General Stark’s contributions are never forgotten.
As we celebrate John Stark Day, we are reminded of the enduring importance of remembering our nation’s founders and the ideals they upheld. In honoring Stark’s legacy, we not only pay tribute to a New Hampshire hero—we also reaffirm our commitment to the principles of freedom, courage, and patriotism that continue to shape our identity as Americans. Let us use this day to reflect, educate, and pass on the stories that form the foundation of our nation.
