Honoring 250 Years of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States Navy and Marine Corps—two branches whose origins trace back to the early days of the American Revolution.

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the creation of a naval force to defend the colonies at sea, giving birth to the U.S. Navy. Less than a month later, on November 10, 1775, the Continental Marines were established to serve alongside the Navy in protecting America’s independence.

Both services began in Philadelphia, the cradle of liberty, and went on to play pivotal roles in securing and defending the freedoms won by our Patriot ancestors.

As we commemorate this historic milestone, the NHSAR honors the courage, discipline, and devotion of the men and women who have served in the Navy and Marine Corps for two and a half centuries. Their legacy continues the spirit of the Revolution—service to country, defense of liberty, and commitment to a cause greater than self.

Huzzah! — we salute 250 years of sea service to the Nation.
