Application for designation as SAR National Event
Commander Curtis Hermann and Vice Commander Barry Lewis, Stark’s Company, NHSAR Color Guard, in collaboration with partner organizations across New York and Vermont, have formally submitted an application requesting the Battle of Bennington be designated a National Event by the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).

The application was prepared jointly with the Walloomsac Battle Chapter of the Empire State Society SAR, Vermont SAR, the Descendants of the Green Mountain Boys, and the Friends of the Bennington Battlefield. It underscores the battle’s decisive impact on the American Revolution, when Patriot militias from Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York defeated British and German forces during a critical phase of the Saratoga campaign. This victory deprived General John Burgoyne of essential supplies and manpower, contributing directly to his surrender two months later—an event widely recognized as the turning point of the war.
The Battle of Bennington has been commemorated annually since 1778, making it one of the oldest continuously observed Revolutionary War anniversaries in the United States. SAR involvement in these commemorations spans decades, with ongoing leadership and participation by chapters and state societies throughout the region.
This application reflects the deep historical significance of Bennington and the enduring commitment of SAR members to preserve and honor our nation’s Patriot heritage. National recognition will ensure this pivotal event receives the attention it deserves for generations to come.”
